Lemelson-MIT Prize, 2017 Associate Professor, MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and MIT Department of Biological Engineering He is also a trustee of the non-profit organizations, Hock E. Tan and K. Lisa Yang Center for Autism Research, K. Lisa Yang and Hock E. Tan Center for Molecular Therapeutics in Neuroscience, Poitras Center for Psychiatric Disorders Research, Phillip A. Roman Fleck — CEO and Medicxi venture advisor — says the funding will see the company’s first candidate to human testing, and expand its pipeline of STAT3 and STAT5 protein degraders. Investigator, McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT While Zhang also focuses also on cancer biology, immunology, and diagnostics for infectious disease, he is interested in addressing brain disorders, especially those associated with complex disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and Alzheimer’s disease, that are difficult, and often impossible, to model using conventional methods. It’s an intriguing experiment, but don’t look for the experiment in cells to make the leap into practice anytime soon. He has substantially expanded this toolbox through discovery and harnessing of new CRISPRs. Perl/UNC Prize in Neuroscience, 2012 In a separate cell experiment, Zhang and his group were able to orchestrate a transitory spike in β-catenin activation and cell growth. Soon after joining the McGovern Institute, in February 2011 Zhang learned of the bacterial CRISPR immune system in a talk by Michael S. Gilmore, a Harvard Medical School professor, and with Gilmore’s mention of the word “nuclease”, Zhang immediately recognized the potential in this system and turned his attention to harnessing CRISPR nuclease as a potential tool for use in mammalian cells and for genome editing. Six months after GlaxoSmithKline paid $250 million for a stake in Vir Biotechnology and a seat at the table developing antibodies against Covid-19, it has a Phase III drug in its hands. The breakthrough swiftly inspired hundreds of academic studies and spawned a wave of biotech startups like Intellia, CRISPR Therapeutics and others that sought to apply the tech to the development of new therapies. Charpentier and Doudna, now one of the busiest scientists/entrepreneurs in the Bay Area, birthed a whole new research field when they published their work on an easily accessible technology for gene editing. In addition, the Zhang lab used the unique activity of the Cas13 family to develop SHERLOCK, a diagnostic that can detect trace amounts of infectious agents such as Zika virus, and even cancer-linked mutations. Cell “40 under 40” 2014 This new diagnostic tool, called SHERLOCK, targets RNA (rather than DNA), and has the potential to transform research and global public health. They call this new advance RESCUE: RNA Editing for Specific C to U Exchange. Bioscience & Technology Business CenterThe University of KansasLawrence, Kansas.
Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna have won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for their groundbreaking work using CRISPR/Cas9 in gene editing. This animation depicts how Cas13 — a CRISPR-associated protein — may be adapted to detect human disease.
He joined MIT and the Broad Institute in 2011, was awarded tenure in 2016, and became a full professor in 2018. CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing tech has taken the lab by storm, in part because of the work Zhang and his one-time colleagues Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier accomplished. Zhang’s CRISPR technology afforded a method for mammalian genome editing and has had enormous impact on experimental science. On Oct 5, 2012, Zhang submitted a breakthrough paper which reported the first successful programmable genome editing and also the first successful use in mammalian cells of CRISPR-Cas9 (Cong et al.
It also alleviated symptoms and reduced ER visits and hospitalization rate compared to placebo, appearing overall to provide better results than a single Lilly antibody showed in September and to compare favorably with the Regeneron antibody cocktail that President Trump received last week.

Recent Highlights.
The Zhang laboratory focuses on the development and application of novel molecular technologies for studying the nervous system. That kind of temporary impact could erase threats of cancer, associated with uncontrolled cell growth while treating wounds. Each year, biopharma companies spend billions of dollars generating, buying and analyzing data. Bristol Myers Squibb said this morning they cleared a PD-1 hurdle, showing for the first time that a checkpoint can clear tumors in early-stage lung cancer patients before surgery. A new company out of Toronto is seeking to put AI and machine learning to the test, using the advanced technology to identify targets in solid cancers and other challenging diseases. “To treat the diversity of genetic changes that cause disease, we need an array of precise technologies to choose from. Feng Zhang zhang@broadinstitute.org. But Zhang, who founded Beam Therapeutics with David Liu and Keith Joung, has moved on in search of better tech, and in a paper published in Science, says they have made real progress in switching from DNA to RNA editing. Feng Zhang discovers and develops CRISPR tools with the potential to diagnose and treat disease, including disorders affecting the nervous system. Eli Lilly has more data from their Covid-19 neutralizing antibodies — data, they say, should warrant an FDA OK. All rights reserved. He has now engineered systems that can cleave within a specific, targeted nucleic acid sequence, and others that are designed to edit specific bases on the DNA or RNA target, and yet others that make epigenetic modifications. And he illustrated the promise of this approach by deactivating APOE4, which may be a ticking time bomb for people at risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Profile. Through rational engineering he is improving specificity of CRISPR systems, and is expanding their window of opportunity. The long-term goal of the laboratory is to develop novel therapeutic strategies for disease treatment. Okazaki award, 2015
