My main reason for loving it was that I absolutely fell in love with MCC and wanted to be Ailsa. Not quite my thing but it did keep my attention.

Geraldine McCaughrean was born in 1951 and brought up in North London. The author's clever stylistic virtuosity may not be fully appreciated by children, but it was an utter delight for me. Since it was initially published in 1988, it's possible I read it as a child, but I don't think so . Instead of feeling hopeful for their future I was merely left feeling melancholy for everything they lost.

The movie is set in the early sixties and is about the lives of basically two families are have become close over the years.Ellen Burstyn gives an outstanding performance as a British homemaker who spends her days happily performing the tasks of her simple life while enjoying a close friendship with the neighbor across the street played by Teri Garr. Oh well! Each chapter was an individual story/lesson although there was a main plot running through the whole story regarding the mysterious guy who turned up and started working in the shop. They were an American couple, who claimed to be Canadian, living in the London suburbs who were revealed as having spied for Russia for many years. The mysterious MCC Berkshire from Reading moves in to Ailsa and her mother's second hand shop, and proceeds to read incessantly. It had a good balance between detail and an overall storyline. Vanessa Vaughn begins this story with sex, action and a violent encounter which instantly grabbed my attention. This was one of my favourite books as a kid, so much so that when I lost it in the process of moving house I had to go out and buy it again.
