On a rim with a 30mm internal width, the 2.4" Trail Boss blows up quite square. Throughout testing, we observed no serious amounts of wear on the tire. To be clear, braking hard will certainly force the tire to slide out, but careful braking through a sharp corner is confident and impressive. Generous spacing between sizable knobs provides better traction in loose or wet conditions, while staying true to its fleet-footed heritage. While some of the more rounded tires have a vague feel, the pronounced shoulder knobs on this WTBtire are reassuring. Seems like a nice, grippy tire.
WTB reworked the tread pattern from their original Trail Boss 2.25” by stacking a double row of tightly-spaced knobs down the centerline.

We have had experience with other manufacturers where this was a warranty issue. Some tires have an open channel between the center and side knobs, which can lead to a feeling of momentary loss of traction. I could see wanting something more aggressive like the Vigilante for soft conditions. While this pronounced center tread may be detrimental to rolling speed, it works very well to shut your speed down. Please make sure that you are posting in the form of a question. They’re about the same width and volume. It would be a strong candidate as a permanent fixture in a number of other locations.
The Trail Boss is also available in TCS Tough/High Grip which uses a softer rubber compound softer and offers a bit more traction.
Our test environment includes a whole lot of decomposed granite. The Trail Boss was a solid performer in most categories.

Can’t wait to get them on some dirt trails. Yes. While we don't identify as weight-weenies here at OutdoorGearLab, this is a lot of weight. This could be a good option for riders on buff trails absent of serious rock gardens. It rolls extremely well over hardpack to make light work of any pedaling, but over anything softer its square profile and tall knobs are slower; not by much, but it’s noticeable uphill.
The 2.4 on the rear is not actually wider than the vigilante 2.3. The Trail Boss performs about as well as possible in this scenario. Widgets, Explore Checked the WTB website and they have these listed at 900 grams. It should be noted that we rode primarily on decomposed granite, a material known to wear tires quite quickly.

When cornering under braking loads, the Trail Boss is even more impressive. I tested the 27.5″ x 2.40″ Trail Boss with WTB’s TCS Light casing and Fast-Rolling Dual DNA compound. Some of the info for the tires is the same, so I won’t go as in-depth here. Cornering abilities are impressive. Rolls well on the street and dirt, less rolling resistance it seems than the WTB Velociraptors I've been using for the last 15+ years. Still, we think this tire is a solid value for a rider looking for a long-lasting, aggressive rear tire that can stand up to a serious beating.
On test we have the 29" version of the Trail Boss in its 2.4" TCS Tough/Fast Rolling guise (it's also available in 2.6" widths and 27.5" diameters).
My son's bike wears knobbys and we're doing more trails these days so I decided to go with the Trail Boss.
Rolling resistance is respectable on the Trail Boss. For the price they are hard to beat!

In the event the tire spun on us, we found it recovered quickly.
It's quite heavy, yet it still rolls reasonably quickly thanks to its center tread design. I had a set of Kenda semi-slick tires that were about 3 years old and showing their age. I would say tread longevity has been above average for a trail tire, with the shoulder knobs just starting to show some signs of wear after a couple hundred miles. I just received this tire today, put it on my bike and went for a ride in both the dirt and on the street. The Trail Boss is aggressively treaded with tall, reasonably well-spaced centre knobs and angled shoulder knobs similar to that of the Schwalbe's Magic Mary.
