I love Willie's well known version and I also like the original by Roy Acuff. I can see her star in heaven. By far the worst track on the album "From Elvis Presley Boulevard". written by Rudy Vincent, Frankie Yankovic Willie Nelson version-5 stars.

All my life, I’ve loved in vain. Even by the principles of sad country songs, “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” is one dingy tune. Nelson is acclaimed as a songwriter, but he didn't write this one. The idea of a song being covered by both Gene Vincent and Elvis Presley may not be too surprising. On the other hand, this somber hit was an original interpretation of “The King of Country Music Roy Acuff.” He recorded and released the song in 1947. Awful cover version.
Moody Blue & Way Down were much more catchy. Meanwhile, the song itself became the No.1 song of 1975. Not this one. Roy Acuff, who was Rose’ partner in the music publishing company “Acuff-Rose Music,” was the first to record the song. A song that Elvis tried to do something with, not sure what, but I think he was trying to make it different, but ends up as a kind of slurred slow drawl. You can watch their breathtaking performance of “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” in the video below. The echo on the master track sucks (to much delay) and Elvis sounds like he's moaning or something... Horrible!
But for that same composition to be interpreted by Olivia Newton-John, Petula Clark, UB40 and several giant names in country music is rather more incongruous. Both the song and the album became iconic in the history of country music. Willie's version is one of the all-time country classics with a perfect arrangement. I think that award goes to the song "Danny Boy". It became a big hit for Willie, and that version is the one that inspired Elvis' version. Willie Nelson first made the Hot 100 as a songwriter in 1961 with "Crazy" (#9, recorded by Patsy Cline) and "Hello Walls" (#12, recorded by Faron Young), but this was his first trip to the chart as an artist. "Early Morning Rain" is one of the few examples I can think of where Elvis basically has the right understated acoustic arrangement.
