Similarly, the film is somewhat effective at drawing from (and riffing on) classic horror movie tropes and iconography - with Parks' well-spoken lunatic Howard Howe feeling like Smith's version of a Vincent Price character. Génesis Rodríguez (Identity Thief) and Haley Joel Osment - who looks a bit like Smith in Tusk - show up as, respectively, Wallace's girlfriend and podcast co-host, but the pair are, ultimately, not so interesting. Even the “good guys” are pretty terrible. It seems silly to even try to question anything in this film, (i really enjoyed it btw) but it did bug me that basically in the very end he goes full walrus, and then all of the sudden they can't change him because he snapped? What makes this movie so wrong is the truly abhorrent behavior of almost everyone in the movie. Let’s get this out of the way: lead character Wallace Bryton (Justin Long) is a huge asshole.
After earning Bachelor's Degrees in Public Relations and Radio/TV/Film from the University of Texas at Austin in 2011, he began writing for the horror website Bloody Disgusting in 2014 before expanding to podcasting in 2019 with the Horror Queers podcast, which looks at horror films through a queer lens. It’s weird, but it does have this element of strong body horror that can actually be pretty freaky. Since Michael Parks passed away, he obviously will not be able to return to his role as Howard Howe. The fact that he was a victim to Howe's violence means that there will undoubtedly be an internalized conflict that may drive him towards even more egregious acts. So does Justin go home? Howe revels at the return of his beloved Mr. Tusk in his monstrous aberration of man and walrus. The bad guy won. Everybody seems to watch them and just go WTF? Wallace's traumatic experience will be tremendously important to any plot, but so will his personal relationships with women, as it was a strong point of his characterization in the original movie. Local detective Frank Garmin puts Ally and Teddy in touch with Guy Lapointe (Johnny Depp), an alcoholic Quebec ex-cop who has been hunting Howe for years, once finding him by chance a few years before under a different name and living situation. He has since become dedicated to amplifying queer voices in the horror community, while also injecting his own personal flair into film discourse. When you combine two polarizing genres into one, it further narrows your audience. His need to prove humans can be made into walruses is so all encompassing he makes your skin crawl.
